Obituary of Richard Kent Kuhns Jr.
Richard “Rick” Kent Kuhns, Jr., a loving husband, father, brother, and friend, passed quietly from this world at the age of 59 on March 11, 2023, after a prolonged illness. Originally born in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Rick moved with his family to Virginia Beach and later graduated from Bayside High School in 1981. While at Bayside, Rick was a trombonist in the marching band where he met several of his lifelong friends. It was also here that Rick met the love of his life, Helen, whom he married in 1991. Together they had two wonderful children, Morrgyn and Tristan. During his lifetime Rick worked as a truck driver, a machinist, and most recently in IT support for the Hampton Public Libraries. However, his “real life’s work” and his true passion was music. A talented bassist, guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, Rick played in several successful local bands over the years including New Shoes, Shrieking Sheiks, London, and most notably his personal musical project Saint Frank. In his spare time, you would often find Rick in his signature bandana, sunglasses and oversized graphic tee either out in his shed upgrading guitars and building amps, or in his studio office playing and writing music on his favorite guitar. Rick was also a dedicated student of history, an enthusiastic genealogist, and an avid Irish Hurling fan. More than anything though, he enjoyed simply hanging out with friends and sharing a laugh with a beer or two (or three). Rick was a larger-than-life personality who lifted those around him. He will forever be remembered for his sarcasm and occasionally inappropriate humor, but he will mostly be remembered for his warmth and his heartfelt hugs. We will always love and miss you. Rick is predeceased by his parents Richard Kent Kuhns, Sr. and Phyllis Virginia Morrison Kuhns. He is survived by his wife Helen Webb Kuhns, daughter Morrgyn Taylor Kuhns, son Tristan Webb Kuhns, mother-in-law Vivian M. Webb, sisters Virginia Pribble and Joan Kestler and husband Andrew, niece Tia Davis and husband William, and nephew Collin Boyce. Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to Lynnhaven River Now, 3712 Holland Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia, 23462. A Celebration of Life for Rick will be held on April 16, 2023 from 1 pm – 5 pm at Jerry’s of Indian River at 1102 Sparrow Road, Chesapeake, Virginia.
