Obituary of Carolyn C. Hughes
Carolyn Camenisch Hughes, long time resident of Newport News, Virginia, passed away at her home in Norfolk on June 18, 2022. Carolyn was born in Stanford, Kentucky on June 6,1946, daughter of the late Dorothy and Bernard Camenisch. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, John W. Hughes, her son Jeffrey B. Hughes and her sister, Susan C. Eriksson. With a masters degree in Library Science from the University of Kentucky, Carolyn had a decades long career as librarian in Newport News and Portsmouth public and community college libraries. Carolyn was an active member of her community as Newport News Branch President of the American Association of University Woman (AAUW) and member of the Kiwanis and Hilton Women’s Club. As a member of the Architectural Review Board North End Huntington Heights, Carolyn helped create the initial guidelines maintaining the character of this historic district. She was instrumental in creating a path for tax credits from state and federal to encourage residents to participate in these preservation efforts. Carolyn was precinct co-chair and membership chair for the Newport News Democratic City Committee and was awarded a Grassroots Volunteer-of-the-year at the state party convention in recognition of her outreach efforts. She diligently worked to promote voter registration and recruited volunteers for poll workers and workers outside the polling stations. As a leader in the Newport News chapter of AAUW, Carolyn led their coordinated voter registration program with (former) Thomas Nelson Community College and the Delta Sigma Theta chapter. Carolyn and her husband, John, were familiar faces staffing voter registration booths at events such as the city’s annual October Fest and Denbigh Days. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 23 at 11 am at the Hilton Christian Church, Newport News.
