Obituary of Janice Darlene Munsey
Janice Darlene Munsey, age 86, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away peacefully, with her family by her side on November 21, 2022. Jan was born August 20, 1936, in Manilla, Iowa, to Harold and Ruby Hinz. After graduating from Denison High School in 1954, Jan lived in Cleveland, Ohio; Boston, Massachusetts; and in Denver, Colorado; where she met and married her husband, Jim Munsey, and started a family. In 1975, they moved with their two young children to Bisbee, Arizona, where she would live for the next 31 years. During that time, she created Shades of Bisbee, the only privately-owned paint and wallpaper store in the area. She spent the last 14 years of her work life in Bisbee with the U.S. Postal Service. Many Bisbee residents have fond memories of interacting with Jan at the customer-service counter of the post office. Shortly after retiring from the U.S.P.S., Jan visited Oregon for the first time and fell in love with the Willamette Valley area. In 2006, Jan decided to uproot herself and move to Salem, Oregon, because she wanted to “live where things grow.” While in Salem, she kept herself busy, volunteering for progressive causes, tending to the neighborhood garden, attending the Unitarian church, and constantly working to improve her midtown property. She moved back to Arizona in 2018 to be closer to her family. Among her many interests, Jan loved gardening, home improvement, and traveling to new destinations. She was devoted to her family, as well as the many friends she made in every town where she lived. She was passionate about community activism, as well as protecting the environment and making the world a better place. Jan was also an avid reader, a dedicated PBS watcher, and an intrepid daily walker, often seen traversing the steep and uneven walkways around her neighborhood. Jan’s kind and generous spirit, her sharp sense of humor, and her radiant smile brightened the lives of those who knew and interacted with her. It is no exaggeration to say she left every place she lived better and more beautiful than she found it. Jan is survived by her daughter Elizabeth of Washington, D.C., son Matthew, daughter-in-law Beth, and granddaughters Brianna and Isobel of Tucson, Arizona, and her brothers, Gordon of Iowa City, Iowa, and Dean of Springfield, Missouri. The family plans to host a celebration of Jan’s life in March 2023. An announcement will be made closer to the date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you help support two of Jan’s favorite non-profits, Arizona Public Media and the Sierra Club, by making a donation in her memory. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at for the Munsey family.
