James Kenneth Hartz
1/18/1943-1/26/2023
Jim was born the only child of Kenneth Winfield Hartz and Avilla Frances Hartz in Rochester, Michigan. The family moved to Washington and Jim was educated in Seattle, graduating from Blanchet High School in 1961. He worked for Safeway, Inc., and refereed high school and youth basketball. Jim loved the outdoors. He hiked the Cascade Mountains in Washington, Banff and Glacier Parks in Canada, the German and Swiss Alps, and enjoyed spending time on the Oregon Coast. Neuropathy put an end to these activities. Jim retired to Kenmore and later moved to Olympia where he spent his final years with quiet grace despite unforgiving pain. Jim liked television sports, Italian food, and European beer and wine, particularly German wine. He has hiked his final trail and is back at the lodge with friends and a glass of Riesling, sharing stories and watching the sun set behind his beloved Lake Louise. Good-bye to a good and gentle man. A celebration of life is being planned.
