Dennis Clayton Schlemmer

Dennis Clayton Schlemmer, age of 72, of Taylor, Michigan passed away peacefully on January 28, 2023. Dennis was the first-born son of Hubert Schlemmer and Florence Schlemmer, née Kitterman, in Detroit, Michigan on March 21, 1950. He was a 1967 graduate of Henry Ford High School in Detroit. Clara Schlemmer, née Holzhueter, was the love of his life and devoted partner for 46 years. Dennis and Clara were joined in matrimony on July 31, 1976, in Lincoln Park, Michigan. Coming from a long line of war veterans spanning back to the American Revolution, his high sense of patriotism prompted him to volunteer for the Vietnam War (1968-1970) with the US Army, Company D - 864th Engineer Battalion. This is where he would start his life-long career as a diesel mechanic. Later in life, Dennis became a Life Member of Conroy-Renye-McNeil VFW Post 4422 in Taylor, Michigan. Many times, he and Clara would travel to reunions of the 864th Engineer Battalion to reconnect with his comrades from the war. An avid outdoorsman, Dennis loved spending his spare time hunting, fishing, and shooting his many firearms. He also enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle with Clara on the back, enjoying the open road. This brought him immense joy and pleasure. Dennis was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Taylor Aerie 3138, where he served as an officer for many years. He was a true reflection of the spirit of the FOE and worked tirelessly to promote the good works of the order. Family was the center of Dennis’ universe. His love was limited not only to humans, but also to all the dogs that became a part of his family over the years, with Princess being his current pup. His kind and funny nature along with his love of beer endeared him to one and all. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Florence, and his dear son, David Newbert. He is survived by his beloved wife Clara; his children Annette (David) Richter of Dearborn, Michigan and Dennis of Taylor, Michigan; his grandchild Kyle (fiancée Kayla Demars) Newbert of Fenton, Michigan; his great-grandchildren Kinsley, Aubree and Bentley; and his brother Jeff (Debbie) Schlemmer of New Port Richey, Florida. Dennis’ life has been a true example of caring and giving. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on February 26, 2023 at Conroy-Renye-McNeil VFW Post 4422 in Taylor.
