Elizabeth Ann Van Tassell

The family of Elizabeth A. Van Tassell is saddened to announce her passing on May 20, 2023, at Merrill Gardens in Santa Maria, CA at the age of 91. Betty, as she was known through much of her life, was born June 30, 1931, in Closter, New Jersey, to Anne & Arthur Meumann. She graduated Closter high school and went on to the Washington School for Secretaries, thereafter working as an executive secretary until her retirement in 1988. In 1954, she married Clinton Van Tassell who remained her spouse for 67 years until his passing. Their first son, David, was born in 1956 and their second, Steven, in 1960. Sadly, David passed in 2019, and Steven lives with his wife, Denise, in California. Betty had no grandchildren. A talented soprano, Betty always had a song in her heart, performing in high school musicals, her church choir, the Eastern Star, and the Voices of La Casa at her community in Florida where she retired in 1988. She was an active member of the Paramus Congregational Church for years. Upon moving to Florida, she became a member of the United Church of Christ in Northport. A lifelong member of Temple and Tilden Chapters, NJ Order of Eastern Star, she served as Worshipful Matron three terms, as well as Worthy Grand Ruth and Worthy Grand Soloist. Betty will be interred with Clinton at the Sarasota National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s name can be submitted to the Alzheimer’s Association.
