John Howard Stone of Washington, DC, beloved husband of Suzanne Quinlan Stone, died on August 27th, 2020, of a heart attack. On that day we were preparing to celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary. He was the cherished brother of Anne Stone Crow and James Alexander Stone. No slouch, John made 1600 on his SATs – a perfect score! After graduating from McDonogh, he earned degrees from Brown (BA & BS), Catholic University (MA), and Harvard (MBA). In his spare time he was an All-Ivy Defensive End. Throughout summers he worked as a Merchant Marine.
We moved to Chicago for John to work for Kraft Foods and he was the youngest recipient of the J.L. Kraft Jade ring. Additionally, we achieved the level of Emerald as Amway Independent Business Owners.
He was an avid reader and a film aficionado – he had 31 books and DVDs checked out from three different libraries when he passed. (I hope I will not have to pay any late fees!) He belonged to three different book clubs. And he was a member of three different Toastmaster Clubs. He was also a clever puzzler: for one of the answers to his Harvard application, he created a crossword puzzle for them to solve! Every Christmas when we got together at our younger brother’s B&B, he’d bring a jigsaw puzzle, each year more challenging than the last. And we’d each get a video from him, perfectly themed.
He was a kind and gentle man and never had a bad word to say about anyone. Everyone liked Stoney. These were the best 43 years of my life. He will be sorely missed.
People have asked where they might make a token donation in his name and so I have included the link to his favorite charity. Network of Caring, https://www.networkofcaring.org, click on 'Investing', then 'Give' from dropdown click 'Honorary Tribute' and enter John's name. I'll be alerted to your name and address so I will be able to thank you.
