James Edward Hosek was born on October 13, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois to Donald E Hosek and Sylvia Culkar Hosek. He grew up in Stickney, Illinois, and graduated from University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine.
He had an affinity for small animals, and they responded warmly to him. He worked both as a house call veterinarian as well as owner/manager of Merrick Animal Hospital. He also was a writer, was fond of reading science fiction, watching Dr. Who, playing golf and Scrabble, vegetable gardening, wood working, and all manner of electronics and tech. He had a quirky sense of humor and exuberance for life.
In 1997 he married Laurie Thorpe. They have two children, Trevor and Kevin. He died at home after a lengthy journey through cancer. He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Richard and Donald A Hosek; his wife and two sons; and dedicated cousins, extended family and a host of friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 30th at 10:00 am at North Park Covenant Church, 5250 N Christiana Ave, Chicago IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated in his name to The Morris Animal Foundation (www.morrisanimalfoundation.org), or to your local library or local garden club.
