Obituary of Virginia L. Benner
Virginia Lee Benner (Sauerbrun) of Strongsville formerly of Dayton, Ohio, passed from this life unto Jesus’s arms on May 30, 2022. She was born February 2, 1934, to Mary L. Sauerbrun. She fell in love and married the love of her life George L. Benner in 1955 celebrating 53 years together before his passing. Virginia was known by many loving names: Ginger, Mom, Grandma, Gigi and Mom Benner by family and friends, and affectionately “Ginger Spice” by the girls at Josephs Hair Salon. She is survived by her children Sherri Nelson (Bill), Linda Martin (Billy), and George F. Benner (Brenda), as well as her four grandchildren: Amie Johnson (Trevor), Cara Smith (Trevor), Leslie Samardzija (Ned), and Zack Benner. Known to her great grandchildren as Gigi, she always spoiled Fitzgerald, Elle, and Isla Johnson, as well as Carter, Camden, and Cade Smith with her love. Ginger also leaves behind sisters Beverly Cummings (Jack Sr) and Patricia Hussong, sister-in-law Yvonne Sauerbrun, and brother-in-law Lynn McGriff in addition to many loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by brothers Robert and Ronald Sauerbrun and sisters Barbara Sauerbrun and Mary Jane McGriff, as well as sister-in-law Rose Mary Sauerbrun and brother-in-law Anson Gene Hussong, and nephews Ray, Chris, and Brian Hussong and Mark Cummings. Ginger graduated in 1953 from Patterson Co op High School where she was a member of National Honor Society, President of Club 18 and Prom Queen. She was employed at the McCall Company before starting her family, then she returned to the work force at the Xenia National Bank. Ginger continued her career until retirement at Freund Precision in Dayton, Ohio. “Mom Benner” was an advisory board member and Past Mother advisor of Xenia Rainbow Assemble #60. Family time was very important to her. She was a great organizer of picnics, family gatherings and bingo trips. Grandma Ginger enjoyed following her grandchildren in all their activities, cheering for them in dance recitals, sports, and band, while traveling to many places to support them. She loved her pets and all the family dogs and cats. Her favorite saying, as the grandchildren were growing up, was “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” Ginger spent her final days at Generations of Strongsville Senior Living. She lived a loving life and would tell you she loved you. A celebration of Ginger’s life will be held on July 9, 2022, at Renew Communities Church, 388 Bagley Road, Berea OH. Family will receive friends starting at 1:00pm to 4:00pm with the Celebration of Life beginning at 2:00. A graveside service and Final interment will be held at Valley View Memorial Garden Cemetery in Xenia Ohio at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Our family wishes to thank all caregivers at Generations of Strongsville and Cypress Hospice for their excellent care and love to our mom.
