George Henry Smith Jr.

George Henry Smith, Jr., 90, of Fairfield Glade, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2023. George was born April 12, 1932 in Mattapoisett, MA, the son of George and Annie (Spurr) Smith. He attended Tabor Academy and served in the United States Navy onboard the USS Okanogan during the Korean War. Following his service George attended Babson College graduating with a BS degree in Business Administration. He worked at Baker, Fentress & Company for more than 20 years, serving as vice-president until early retirement in 1991. His very full retirement life, with Penny included rescuing many Golden Retrievers, volunteering with the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Wilmington, NC, boating, motor homing and many cruises on the open seas. George also served on the finance committee at the United Methodist Church in Fairfield Glade and completed a course in Professional Photography thru the N.Y. Institute of Photography. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Jane S. Young and the mother of his children, Nancy Wilson. George is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Penelope (Penny) Smith, his children Tracey (Mike) Laubsted of Alamo, CA, Russell Smith of Burr Ridge, IL, Sarah (Shawn) Ware of Belmont, NC, Douglas Smith of Bryant, AR, and stepson Brian (Annie) Bauman of Ft. Collins, CO. He also is survived by his grandchildren Matthew Laubsted, Christopher Laubsted, Logan Ware, Grayson Smith, Peyton Smith and Nathan Smith. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023 from noon – 1pm at the United Methodist Church in Fairfield Glade with a Celebration of Life immediately following.
