James Douglas BUNDY

December 13, 1950September 12, 2022
James Douglas Bundy (Doug), 71, crossed over and into eternal life on Monday, September 12, 2022, in Independence, Missouri. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Merlin (Ed) Bundy and Grace Eitel, and also his son, Chad Epley. He is survived by his wife, Lynn Schultz Bundy of Independence, Missouri; his son, Gregory Bundy from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his daughter, Chelsey Cobbs and grandson London Cobbs from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and also his sister and brother-in-law, Jan and David Griffith from Melbourne, Florida. Doug was well known for his love of music. In high school, he was the president of Orchestra and Band for two years. After winning a number of local and state championships, he became a professional musician (trombonist) and played for some of the biggest names in the industry, like Dionne Warwick and Ike Turner whom he toured with for six months. He also toured in Canada with his band called The Rising Suns and opened for Blue Oyster Cult in New York City’s Central Park in front of a crowd of 10,000 people. Doug was inducted into the Music Hall of Fame in three states: Kansas, Iowa, and South Dakota, and his last gig was in the Camelot Ballroom in Overland Park, Kansas with the Abel Ramirez Big Band where he served as trombone section leader. Along with music, Doug also loved sports. At Van Horn High School he played running back, and as a father he enjoyed watching his son, Greg, excel in baseball, putting him through private lessons from the time he was 12 years old. Though Doug’s work involved a lot of traveling, he never once missed one of his son’s games. Above all, Doug was a born again believer in Jesus Christ, and a man who deeply loved his family. A memorial service was held in his honor on Sunday, September 18, 2022, in Independence, Missouri, where several of his loved ones shared their memories of a life well lived, and four trombonists from the Abel Ramirez Big Band performed a short tribute. Doug will be buried at Sunny Lane Cemetery in Del City, Oklahoma, next to his father.
