Hazel Burnett (Rideout) Chapin, 85, of Fishers, IN passed away Friday, August 21, 2020, after a short illness. Hazel was a dedicated servant of Christ as a mother, pastor’s wife of three churches, and Midwest Representative Missionary for Arab World Missions and Pioneers. After the death of her husband, Jack in 2016, Hazel, moved to Fishers, IN in the Indianapolis area, where they had lived and worked prior to retiring in Florida.

Hazel was born December 18, 1934 in Hopewell, VA, to Joseph and Rebecca (Jackson) Rideout. Their family, including Hazel’s brother Melvin Rideout, moved to Norfolk, VA during WWII where her father worked in the shipyards as a bricklayer. After the war the family moved to Richmond, VA. Hazel travelled with Jack for a 1-year teaching assignment at Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada. Then Jack attended Gordon Seminary in Massachusetts. Following that Jack and Hazel pastored churches in Pascoag, R.I., Natrona Heights, PA and Worcester, MA. Then in mid-career, Jack and Hazel worked as Mission Board representatives for Arab World Missions, and were based in Indianapolis. They finished their career there, then moved south to North Port, Florida for retirement. Following Jack’s death in 2016, Hazel moved back to the Indianapolis area to be close to her daughter, Brenda who lives there. Through life Hazel enjoyed sharing the Bible and church activities, playing tennis, and traveling with family and friends.

Hazel is survived by daughter Brenda Chapin of Fishers, IN; son, Mark (Ruth) Chapin of Houston, TX; three grandchildren Seth, Matthew and Emma. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Joseph and Rebecca Rideout of Richmond VA, her brother Melvin Rideout, and her husband Jack.

Hazel ~ a special name for a special lady. We knew her and Jack at Pascoag, RI. Her special smile and sweet voice will always be in my memory. We did a one-to-one sharing together and she challenged me to continue doing that with others and I have. As I have disciplined others I always think of her disciplining me and thank God for the disciplines she taught me. She was my example of a God-fearing woman. I thank God for allowing me to know her and to be taught by her. Both of you, Mark and Brenda, were given a special gift of having her as a mother. Honor her by walking close to our Jesus whom she so dearly loved. By the way, Mark, our son, Paul, died 3 years ago. He had serious heath problems. Love Jan & Phil.

We have known Hazel since she and Jack were serving with AWM and began to occasionally stay overnight with us when they came to St. Louis. We visited with them both in Indiana and later in Florida when they moved there. Hazel has always been a kind and gentle woman who loved Jesus and served him faithfully. She cared about those around her and showed it in many practical ways. Even though she will be missed by all who knew her, we are
glad she is now free of her health problems and with her Heavenly Father.

Dear Brenda, Mark, and family, Trinity Church in Venice, FL was so blessed to have Hazel and Jack as part of our family. They both served so faithfully in our midst, teaching, preaching, and loving us. So many wonderful memories of them in the prime of their retirement and then in their declining years. I was so glad to know them as dear friends and to be able to help Hazel during Jack's illness. It was our privilege to be able to help her get ready to move back to Indy. Now she has taken the next step on the journey to which she has been called. We will miss her here but we rejoice with her and must be sure that we will see Hazel and Jack again with our Saviour in Heaven. Thanks for the lovely video of your family's pictures.

Hazel was a lovely lady. I remember her from Trinity Church in Venice. Thought she was lucky to have Jack as a husband. Met him in Publix on Sunday after church. He was buying a roasted chicken and sides so she would not have to cook on Sunday. They were a loving couple.

Hazel Chapin--godly, Christ honoring and lovely lady of the Proverbs 31 variety. She loved the Lord, His church, His Word, missions, prayer and her family. She gave herself away for others. I am so thankful the Lord sent Jack and Hazel to Florida! Ruth and I spent many times with them and loved them. We got to know you Chapins as a family. One memory: when Jack would be voicing some concern a little too enthusiastically and Hazel could either simply give him a "look" or an "Oh, Jack" and he understood. We have great hope and confidence for the Heaven that has been prepared for them through the death and resurrection of our Lord. All for the glory of God that the nations may know Him.
In Christ's Love, John Grady

Hal and I definitely remember Hazel and also Jack with fond memories. We all lived in the Sarasota, Florida area around the same time. We attended the same church and found from that a bond which developed into a lasting friendship. We did bible study together as well as gathered with a group of friends often for dinner and social time. During the years we were together we made some wonderful memories that will always be with us. Hazel was a true child of the Lord and her light shined at all times.

Jack and Hazel were the first pastor and wife I met after accepting Christ at Billy Graham crusade in 1964 the next year I found the Baptist in Pascoag I appreciated them loving me and helping me grow in my faith They were always there for me. Years ago they came to visit Jeanne and me in the mountains of New Mexico I so pleased they took time to find us. That shows how loving and caring the were. They will always be remembered by all the lives they touched Some day we will all get to see them in heaven Love you all I t good to know they are in heaven together. But missed on earth by family and friends

Brenda and Mark: As you know, you had wonderful parents. I so appreciated your dad's poems through the years he was in Florida. I knew both Jack and Hazel at Tab. Your mother was so very sweet to me and to everyone else. She was a wonderful supporter to your dad with his more outgoing ministry. He once put me in touch with some friends of his in Hebron, Israel, and I had an amazing visit with them in Bethlehem. Your mother was a delightful letter writer. After your dad's death, she wrote beautiful, thoughtful thank you notes, even when I think it must have been an effort for her in later years. Wishing you well as you adjust to the changes in your lives now. God bless you. Martha Sue Batt
