Dr. George Alexander Kennedy
November 26, 1928 – July 28, 2022
On Thursday, July 28,2022 Dr. George Alexander Kennedy, professor of classics, father, and grandfather passed away at the age of 93.
George was born on Monday November 26,1928 in Hartford Connecticut, to George and Ethel (Hall) Kennedy. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in classics from Harvard University in 1954. His career began as an instructor at Harvard University in 1955. From there he was a professor at Haverford, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of North Carolina until his retirement in 1995. On Monday April 25,1955 he and Mary Lee Hunnicutt were married. They had one daughter, Claire Alexandra Kennedy.
George was known throughout the world for his writings and translations of Greek and Roman works on rhetoric. He also had a love and passion for Locomotives, and a fascination with the scheduling and timing of the railway systems. He was working on research and writings of this before he passed. George had an almost insatiable sweet tooth and would frequently enjoy a midnight snack. He was gentle, kind, and an advocate for many causes; most notably, animals.
George was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary Lee. He is survived by his daughter Claire, and grandchildren Alex, Amy, and Emily. He will be greatly missed.
