Norman Willis Berg
April 6, 1930 – January 1, 2021
Norman Willis Berg, age 90, of Portage Mi, passed away on Friday, January 1, 2021 at home surrounded by family. The son of Milton & Ila (Lowe) Berg, he was born on April 06, 1930 in Dalton, OH. Norman was one of seven children in a family that he said was “as poor as a church mouse”.
Norman dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to go to work at Smith dairy in Orrville Ohio. His first job was to scrub out milk jugs by hand. He used his work ethic, instilled by his father, to always give 125%. Norman’s work ethic and intelligence were recognized and over a 47 year career he progressed to become the Vice President of Production for Smith Dairy. Over that time the company grew from 12 to 350 employees. Throughout his career Norman worked every job in the dairy and spoke highly of his coworkers and those who helped him along the way. Never the one to sit still, Norman was a skilled woodworker and completed countless projects, many of which have become family heirlooms. He enjoyed woodworking and was active in his Church and community.
There will never be another like Norm Berg. He enjoyed his life, he loved and laughed easily. He was strong in mind, body and heart. He was grateful for all the blessings the Lord had given him in his life. He worked hard all his life, but his family was always his first priority. To the 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren he leaves behind in Michigan, he was an example of what hard work and integrity can accomplish. He would always encourage them with his signature phrase “you go for it”.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents and first wife Agnes. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Constance; children, Rick (Vicki) Berg of Blue Ridge Ga and Debora Olson of Ocoee Fl; three grandchildren, Katie Berg of Atlanta Ga, Erik Olson of Orlando Fl and Kayle Olson of Ocoee Fl; two great grandchildren; three sisters, Marge Lehman of Orrville Ohio, Nellie Nickles of Smithville Ohio and Jo Hudson of Madison Ohio.
Private memorial service to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions can be made to St Judes Childrens Hospital. To send a message of sympathy to the family, sign Norman’s online guest book, or to share a favorite memory, please visit: www.NeptuneSociety.com
