Obituary of Dorothy Grace Buckingham
Dorothy Grace (Clougher) Buckingham, 100, died peacefully at home in Venice, FL, on September 13, 2022, surrounded by family. A gifted musician, florist, and Sunday School teacher, she used her many talents to serve God in Christian ministry for over 70 years—most notably as pianist and youth director at Wantagh Baptist Church (Long Island, NY). As a young woman who lived through the Great Depression, she landed her first job as a Secretary in New York City (Manhattan) getting paid $15/week. Marrying in 1942–her husband Al already serving in uniform—together they formed part of “The Greatest Generation” whose values so powerfully impacted our nation in war and in peace. Both native New Yorkers, they moved to Florida in the mid-1980s. When asked how she would like to be remembered, Dorothy replied, “That I loved the Lord and to the best of my ability carried out my responsibilities as a mother by loving my children and training them to walk with God.” She and Al claimed Romans 8:28 as their life verse: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.” Preceded in death by her loving husband, Albion, and her much loved daughter, Dorothy LeRoy, she is survived by: sister Janice (George) Johnson; sons Allan (Sherie) Buckingham and Richard (Barbara) Buckingham; son-in-law David LeRoy; eight grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Interment will be at Sarasota National Cemetery. A “Celebration of Her Life” will be held on Nov. 22, 2022 in Venice, FL. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at for the Buckingham family.
