Howard W. Van Nostrand II, “Howie” June 1952 – April 2021

Howard Van Nostrand, known to friends as “Howie”, passed away on April 11, 2021, at the age of 68 years. A native of South Bound Brook, NJ he graduated from Bound Brook High School in 1971. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the USS Shreveport as a Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Petty Officer from 1971 until 1976. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal during his time with the Navy.

Howard lived a life of service to his community both in New Jersey and Florida. He was a member of the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department and elected Chief and answered the call to ground zero on September 11, 2001. During his time in Florida, he served as Commander of the American Legion NO-VEL Post 159.

He is survived by his daughter Keriann, siblings Cathy Ellen, Robert, John and Ruthann, nephews Raymond, Brian, Eric, Jacob, Liam and Spencer and long-term companion Leanne Rodick. A military burial will be held Friday, June 4, 2021, at 2:30 pm at Sarasota National Cemetery – 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota, FL 34241.

A Celebration of Howie’s Life will be held at 1pm – 4 pm on Saturday June 5 at the American Legion NO-VEL Post 159 – 1770 E Venice Ave, Venice, FL 34292 Memorial donations in memory of Howard can be made to the American Legion NO-VEL Post 159 at 1770 E Venice Ave, Venice, FL 34292 or the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department on their website at http://martinsvillefire.org/donations
