Karen Marie Lantz
March 23, 1950 – August 2, 2020
Karen Marie (Sebela) Lantz was born to John and Dolores Sebela on March 23, 1950, growing up in Berwyn, Illinois with her 2 sisters Merrilee (Godek) and Joyce (Whelchel), and brother Chuck. While she was just a sophomore attending Morton West High School, she met the love of her life, Robert Lantz. They dated for many years, eventually marrying on January 28, 1972.
Karen was very well educated and intelligent, graduating with Honors from U of I, obtaining a Bachelor Degree in Mathematics, which she followed up with her first Masters in Computer Science, also from U of I. She finished her formal education graduating from Northwestern University School of Management in 1979 with an MBA. She used her education to work as a Software Support Manager, pioneering the way for future women to work at higher levels within the computer industry.
Karen and her husband Robert moved to Naperville, Illinois in 1981, then went on to have children. First they had twins Jeff and Corey in 1985, then a few years after Corey’s death, they decided to adopt a baby girl named Danica in 1991.
Karen stayed extraordinarily involved with the kids, attending nearly every single game, practice, rehearsal, performance, meeting and event of theirs that she could. Her quest even led her to become a scout leader for both her son and daughter.
While busy raising the kids, she continued to pursue some of her passions, including singing, musical theater, gardening, art, and volunteering for her community. Many would describe her as outgoing, talkative and caring. She adored people and put a lot of her energy into being there for her loved ones, friends, neighbors and anyone who was in need. She was incredibly smart and super creative, always having an artistic, unique way of doing things. She lived un-apologetically, almost as if any day could be her last.
Sadly, after a long battle with dementia, she passed peacefully in her nursing home on the afternoon of August 2, 2020. Her family was able to go and say goodbye in the days before her passing, which brought them significant peace.
She is survived by her loving husband Robert, her son Jeff, daughter-in-law Mary, her daughter Danica, her sisters Merrilee and Joyce, and her brother Chuck. Please allow her family time to grieve and arrange services.
