Obituary of Pat Monahan
On May 3, 2022, Joel Patrick “Pat” Monahan drew his last breath surrounded by his wife and daughters. Born on June 19, 1945, in Pensacola, Florida, he lived a life full of adventure, sacrifice, and humor. After being drafted into the United States Army in 1965, Pat found his calling and became a career serviceman. His passion was flying helicopters. His hobby? Memorizing manuals and being able to recall small details to prove someone wrong. He retired a decorated officer from the United States Army in 1993. He returned to Northwest Florida, completing his college education and beginning his second career with Florida’s Department of Transportation. He once again memorized statutes and regulations, this time using his keen memory to “entertain” his family by retelling those statutes and their violations during SO. MANY. DINNERS! Pat is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ida Monahan, his sister Honora Monahan, and brother Michael Monahan. He is survived by his wife Terry Monahan, daughters Stacy Monahan (Ben Smith), Amanda Ruth (Joshua Ruth), grandchildren Amelia, Coralyn, Lyla, Darby, and Owen, sister Mary Nelsen (Lynn Nelsen), nephew Michael “Joey” Monahan, a large extended family, and lifelong friends. He was greeted with the wagging tails of his best K9 friends: Bonnie, Louie, Amos, and Gus. The family would like to thank Peoples Home Health and Emerald Coast Hospice. Most importantly, they send their sincerest gratitude to Carington Manor (Crestview, Florida) for their compassion, kindness, and patience during his final months. Dementia was the fiercest foe of his life. It proved unconquerable, but he never stopped fighting. It could not take his courage, his bravery, or his strength–he was a soldier until the end.
